Methylation of ribosomal proteins in Escherichia coli.
Escherichia coli was grown in a medium containing [1-(14)C]methionine and [methyl-(3)H]methionine, and the (3)H/(14)C ratio was determined for each of the ribosomal proteins derived from the 70S ribosome. Evidence indicates that six proteins from the 50S subunit were methylated: L7, L9, L11, L12, L18, and L33. Methylation of several other 50S proteins (such as L1, L3, L5, etc.) may also occur. ...
متن کاملPosttranslational Modifications of Ribosomal Proteins in Escherichia coli
А number of ribosomal proteins inEscherichia coliundergo posttranslational modifications. Six ribosomal proteins are methylated (S11, L3, L11, L7/L12, L16, and L33), three proteins are acetylated (S5, S18, and L7), and protein S12 is methylthiolated. Extra amino acid residues are added to protein S6. С-terminal amino acid residues are partially removed from protein L31. The functional significa...
متن کاملExtraction and isolation of individual ribosomal proteins from Escherichia coli.
We have described a new method for the quantitative separation of ribosomal proteins and ribosomal ribonucleic acid. A procedure for the preparation of individual ribosomal proteins by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is also described. By the use of gels with smaller pores, at least four of the electrophoretic components from the 30S ribosome can be split into additional protein fractions. B...
متن کاملImmunological similarities between specific chloroplast ribosomal proteins from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and ribosomal proteins from Escherichia coli.
Polyclonal antibodies were elicited against seven of the 33 different proteins of the large subunit of the chloroplast ribosome from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Three of these proteins are synthesized in the chloroplast and four are made in the cytoplasm and imported. In western blots, six of the seven antisera are monospecific for their respective large subunit ribosomal proteins, and none of t...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent variation in the extent of methylation of ribosomal proteins L7 and L12 in Escherichia coli.
The amount of epsilon-N-monomethyllysine in ribosomal proteins L7 and L12 in Escherichia coli is dependent upon the cell growth temperature. At 37 degrees C or above, very small amounts were detected. Dramatic increase in the content of epsilon-N-monomethyllysine in these proteins was observed when the growth temperature was lowered.
